What to see in Barcelona

Every trip to Barcelona has to start with a walk down Las Ramblas, the city’s most popular boulevard. This tourist promenade filled with bar terraces, shops, flower stalls and street artists links Plaça de Catalunya with the old port. The views from the mountains of Montjuïc and Tibidabo are truly stunning and the picturesque Poble Espanyol is a micro-cosmos of craft shops and unique streets.

One of the main reasons to travel and stay in hotels in Barcelona is the large amount of monuments you can find in the city. Barcelona’s icon is none other than the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s world-famous church which is still in construction, whose façade, crypt and apse were declared a World Heritage Site. Passeig de Gràcia is an avenue that is home to some of Modernism’s most famous buildings, such as Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, both by Gaudí; or Casa Lleó Morera and Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

The intense colours, the curvy shapes, the sculptures on the façades and the evocative spaces that Antoni Gaudí created in Barcelona give the city a fascinating personality. Gaudí used to say that a work of art should be seductive and universal, which is exactly the mark he left on the city: the Sagrada Familia, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, Parc Güell… We also recommend that you visit the Gaudí house-museum to understand the artist’s work in depth.

Another unmissable place to visit in Barcelona iis the Gothic district, the oldest part of the city. Lose yourself in its narrow streets and visit some of its most charming attractions, including the Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulàlia, Plaça del Rei and the basilica of Santa Maria del Pi. Nearby, in the Born district, you can find the Picasso Museum and the world-famous Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar.

What to do in Barcelona

Barcelona’s to-do list is endless. The Catalan capital has over 2.5 miles of beaches located just 10 minutes from the city centre, which is why one of the first things you have to do when you visit the city is sunbathe and go swimming in beaches like La Barceloneta, Sant Miquel or Somorrostro among many others.

Barcelona can also boast about its many museums, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, shops and lively nightlife. On the other hand, one of the most popular tourist attractions is the famous football stadium Camp Nou, the most visited museum in the city by tourists from around the world.

Palau de la Música is another of Barcelona’s most important landmarks. This concert venue was built between 1905 and 1908 by the Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and it is one of the most representative masterpieces of Catalan Modernist art. Remember to admire the beautiful columns decorated with mosaics on the second floor as well as the stunning skylight on the rooftop ceiling, if possible before going to one of the many concerts it hosts, which will allow you to enjoy the perfect acoustics of the palace.

Lastly, Barcelona is a city which will awaken your taste buds and gourmet side. When you visit the Catalan capital, remember to sample traditional dishes such as pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato), coca (savoury pastries), botifarra (thick pork sausage), arròs negre (rice with squid ink) and crema catalana (crème brûlée).
