About Los Alcázares
Los Alcázares dates back 2,000 years to the Roman occupation, and clear evidence of this history can be seen at the Balsas Romanas de los Diegos archaeological site. The name of the town, “Alcázares”, comes from the Arabic word “Al Kazar”, which means palace or fortress. During the Islamic period, rich Arab families chose this location as a holiday destination because of the water here and, to this day, people still choose hotels in Los Alcázares for the same reason.
At the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of Modern era, during the Christian repopulation, Los Alcázares became a strategic trading hub. Therefore, it had to protect itself from Berber pirate attacks by building a series of defence towers: Rame, Blanca, Negro, Saavedra and Silva.
Later, at the beginning of the 19th century, Los Alcázares once again became a holiday destination for noble families and residents of the region who visited to take part in the popular “novenarios”, nine baths in the area’s therapeutic waters to renew energies. This resulted in the construction of the Balneario de la Encarnación health resort in 1904, a building which still retains its original character to this day.
The commercial and demographic development in the area led to the construction of the Spanish Military Seaplane Base in 1915, which is still used by the military today.
All of these events encouraged the people’s desire for independence. At the time, Los Alcázares was under the control of the Torre Pacheco and San Javier councils but, finally, on 13 October 1983 Los Alcázares established its own council. This date is still celebrated by the people of Los Alcázares with the “Día del Caldero”, a day when different clubs gather on the beach to prepare the region’s typical rice and fish dish, Caldero. It’s not to be missed!
The 7 kilometres of fantastic beaches at Los Alcázares make up an open-air spa thanks for the medicinal properties of the waters. The high concentration of salt and iodine, the virtual lack of waves and the shallow depth of the water make hotels in Los Alcázares the ideal destination for a family holiday.
The coastline is also the ideal place for water sports and, from the nautical sports centre, you can enjoy activities such as wind surfing, kite surfing, kayaking or sailing. In fact, Los Alcázares is home to CAR Infanta Cristina, a high performance sports centre where various clubs and federations regularly meet. If water sports are not for you, instead you can opt for a round of golf on one of the region’s superb golf courses.
Visitors can also visit the Municipal Aeronautical Museum, which houses model versions of old planes as well as military equipment used throughout Spain’s aeronautical military history.
There are also boat routes around the Mar Menor islands that allow you to travel to different beaches and witness incredible sunsets while feeling the cool breeze of the sea on your face.
For nature, in between Los Alcázares and Santiago de la Ribera you’ll find Playa de la Hita, a wild beach with abandoned salt flats, rich coastal vegetation and small wetlands where birds such as the Little tern and the Black-winged stilt rest.
During Holy Week, the people of Los Alcázares remember the Berber pirate invasions of the Mar Menor that took place between the 15th and 18th centuries. Over the course of the week, you will see pirates disembarking on the beaches and medieval markets full of people in period costume on the streets.
Another important festival in the area is the Semana Internacional de la Huerta y el Mar (International Week of the Land and Sea) held in August. Declared as a regional event of tourist interest, this festival is a showcase of local folklore, culture and gastronomy.
