Costa Cálida

The Costa Cálida is one of Spain’s best kept secrets when it comes to holiday destinations. Many people are unaware of the numerous attractions that can be found in Murcia, starting with its fantastic beaches. In addition to La Manga del Mar Menor, the Costa Cálida has many other tourist destinations such as Águilas, Mazarrón, Los Alcázares and the Cartagena coastline, all of which boast stunning beaches. Discover fantastic beaches such as Playa de Bolnuevo, in Mazarrón and Playa de la Azohía and Cala Cortina, in Cartagena. The pretty town of Águilas is also home to some of the best beaches in the whole province, specifically: Playa de los Cocedores and Playa de la Carolina, which are part of the Cuatro Calas protected area.

Águilas also boasts many different places to explore such as El Hornillo Pier, San Juan de las Águilas Castle and the Railway Museum.

Playa de los Narejos in Los Alcázares is another fantastic beach with a beachfront promenade, shops, beach bars and services such as showers, toilets and disabled access. Additionally, Los Alcázares is one of the destinations in Murcia with the most to offer tourists visiting the Costa Cálida.

However, it is without doubt that the best beaches in Murcia can be found in the Calblanque Natural Park. Imagine a completely natural beach with soft, golden sand, surrounded by dunes and mountains. And imagine bathing in the crystal-clear waters and exploring its most secluded coves.

The Costa Cálida also hides a huge cultural heritage. One of the places with the greatest number of monuments and fascinating buildings is the city of Murcia. Set aside a day to visit the capital and namesake of this province and stroll around the Plaza del Cardenal Beluga, discover the interior of the Episcopal Palace and the Cathedral of Murcia and be surprised by the majesty of the Teatro Romano and the Real Casino de Murcia.

Cartagena is one of the places that you must visit in order to discover the legacy of Murcia. As well as being a pretty coastal town, Cartagena is home to two of the most significant monuments in the province: the Punic wall and the spectacular and extremely well preserved Roman Theatre.

You also mustn’t miss the monumental city of Lorca, that boasts the San Patricio Collegiate, Palacio Guevara and the Castle of Lorca, from which you can appreciate excellent views of the whole region.

Finally, Caravaca de la Cruz is another destination that is worth a visit. Designated as a Holy City since 1998, it is home to the Shrine of La Vera Cruz, where you will find Christian relics that attract thousands of visitors each year. If you have more time, you could follow it with a visit to Jumilla and Yecla, two pretty towns famous for their wines.

If you want to combine a sun and beach holiday with excursions in the countryside and outdoor activities, Murcia offers some fantastic options. Go on an adventure and raft the Segura river, follow a hiking trail through the green forests of the Sierra Espuña or cycle around one of the numerous green lanes in the region. One of the most highly recommended is the north-west route that cuts through the vineyards of Bullas. You should also dedicate a day to exploring the caves: Cueva del Puerto and Cueva de la Serreta, which contain highly valuable cave paintings that date back seven thousand years.

Equally, you can’t miss the famous Bolnuevo rock formations, they really look like they’ve been taken from another planet! Also, the rose-coloured salt lakes in San Pedro del Pinatar and the spectacular scenery of the Gebas Badlands are other sites that are definitely worth visiting.

The Costa Cálida is also a true paradise for lovers of water sports. Dive into the crystal waters and discover sunken ships in the Cabo de Palos marine reserve or experience the amazing flora and fauna of the Águilas coastline. However, one of the best areas for water sports in Murcia is the Mar Menor.

Isla del Ciervo in La Manga and the beaches in los Alcázares, are two incredible locations for kite surfing, wind surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding. The huge lagoon on the Mar Menor coastline, with its 170 square kilometres of warm, shallow and calm waters and favourable winds has all the ingredients to make it the perfect place for practising sport.

Murcia also has some of Spain’s best golf courses. Some of the facilities on offer include: Mar Menor Golf, La Serena Golf, El Valle Golf and La Manga Club. But there are many more; a total of 22 golf courses in the whole province in fact.

After talking about the reasons to visit Murcia, the only thing left to do is to choose the hotels and accommodation on the Costa Cálida that you like the best.
