The Costa de Almería extends along 217 kilometres of beaches, cities, villages, salt lakes and other natural areas, making this province one of the most popular holiday destinations. Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, Retamar, Vera and Mojácar, are just a few of the places most frequently visited by tourists.
Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce, two towns in very close proximity, are home to most of the tourist facilities in the province. They are where you will find some of the best hotels and accommodations on the Costa de Almería. One of their primary attractions are the fantastic beaches with soft sand and crystal-clear waters, many of which boast blue flag status, including Playa de La Bajadilla, Playa de Urbanización Roquetas, Playa de Las Salinas, Playa de Aguadulce and Playa Serena. Other attractions include leisure facilities, cultural sites and the chance to practise water sports such as diving. On this part of the coastline, you will find one of the most extensive areas of the marine plant posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean.
Vera is another well-visited destination on the Costa de Almería because of its fantastic beaches. And, unlike other tourist areas, Vera’s beaches are not crowded with people. El Playazo, Puerto Rey and Las Marinas-Bolaga are some of the most popular.
For its part, Mojácar doesn’t just offer fantastic beaches, but it is also considered one of the most beautiful towns in the whole of Andalusia. Therefore, if you decide to stay in Mojácar, save a day for visiting the old town, which is full of narrow white streets with flowers and viewpoints where you can enjoy captivating views of the sea.
Beyond the sun and the beaches, Costa de Almería also offers a wealth of cultural activities, as well as plenty of activities for lovers of sport and nature. Almería has a long history that dates back to Prehistoric times and there are many extremely valuable archaeological sites to visit, such as Los Millares and El Argar, from the second millennium BC, as well as later sites such as the Alcazaba of Almería. This imposing fortified citadel is the largest of its kind built during the Arab Period in Spain. It’s essential to climb up and walk around its towers in order to take in its size and to enjoy the fantastic views over the city. The Cathedral of the Incarnation is another site that can’t be visited in Almería. It has a peculiar style for a cathedral as continual attacks by pirates meant that it was built in the shape of a fortress.
However, the real treasure that all visitors fall in love with in Almería is Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Here you will find many of Almería’s and Spain’s best beaches. The most spectacular are Playa de los Genoveses, Playa de Mónsul, Playa de los Muertos, Playa de Agua Amarga and Playa del Playazo. The volcanic origin of the area and the peculiar weather conditions (it’s one of the driest areas in the whole of Spain) have resulted in curious geological formations such as Los Escullos and the Arrecife de las Sirenas. And for a day trip, why not visit the charming coastal villages Carboneras and Las Negras.
Cinema lovers will be in heaven in this region, as they can recreate scenes from major films that have been shot here, in particular, all the Westerns that were filmed in the sixties and seventies in the Tabernas Desert. Film sets that have been graced by the presence of actors of the calibre of Clint Eastwood, Claudia Cardinale and Brigitte Bardot still exist here to this day. Visit the Oasys Mini Hollywood and be blown away by the desert scenery of this western-themed town.
The Costa de Almería is also a fantastic destinations for golf lovers. There are two reasons for this: the excellent year-round weather in the province, with average temperatures of 19 degrees and over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, and the huge range of golf courses on offer. Alborán Golf, Club de Golf Playa Serena, Valle del Este Golf Resort and Club Marina Golf Mojácar, are just some of the clubs where you can practise your swing.
Another of the primary reasons for visiting the Costa de Almería is the delicious cuisine, which is based on the Mediterranean diet with touches of Arab influence. Don’t leave without having tried delicious dishes such as gurullos, migas, olla de trigo or ajo colorao, among many others. And, of course, seafood is the star of the show on the coast. Rice and fish are combined into an infinite list of tapas in local bars and restaurants.
